Giving Back Spotlight: Upward Bound House
This is a very busy time as a boutique jewelry retailer, with customers excitedly starting their holiday shopping. It brings us so much joy to help people find the perfect piece of jewelry for their wife, daughter, mother, girlfriend, best friend, or other loved one! But we also love giving back to our community during this season of gratitude. We’re joining organizations around the world on Giving Tuesday to do exactly that.
Earlier this month, Moondance Jewelry Gallery owners Dan and Suzanne spent a day at one of their beloved local nonprofits here in Santa Monica, Upward Bound House (UBH). This organization’s mission is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in L.A. by providing housing, supportive services, and advocacy. They do this by helping families with children access basic resources and successfully transition into their own homes.
Providing a Springboard for Employment and Education Opportunities
Since its founding in 1990, UBH has helped 2,633 families through its programs, including 5,018 children. Many of those families make the transition from living on the streets or in parks or cars to living in homes of their own.
Through the years, the organization has expanded its services as needed. It offers programs and services for vulnerable families include temporary housing, permanent housing, aftercare, health & wellness, educational support, and pantry programs.
Amazingly, 95% percent of clients placed in permanent housing by Upward Bound House remain in permanent housing after a year of being placed.
Every Black Friday Purchase at Moondance Benefits Upward Bound House
This year, we’re donating 3% of every purchase made at Moondance (both in store and online) during our November sale (11/15-11/30/22). Funds will go directly to Upward Bound House to support their work with families in need.
As a token of our appreciation, you’ll get a little something too. Earn $50 for every $250 you spend 11/15 – 11/30/22.* Not only will you get your holiday shopping done early, you’ll do something good for an organization that makes a tremendous difference in the Los Angeles community.

Adopt-A-Unit Program
Help families furnish their temporary homes at UBH as they work toward finding permanent housing. You can purchase items yourself or donate to the program so that UBH can take care of families in need on your behalf. Contact UBH for a shopping list of bathroom items, kitchen items, bedding, cleaning supplies, baby items, and other miscellaneous items, or to learn about sponsoring this program.
Adopt-A-Family Program
Adopt a family this holiday season. You’ll receive information about a family, including their interests and needs, by November 25th via email, and you can then purchase and wrap gifts for them to receive during the holiday. UBH asks that gifts are dropped off on December 9th. Contact UBH to learn more.
Donate Grab & Go Breakfast Bags
UBH tries to ease some of the morning rush to school or work by providing families in UBH programs Grab & Go Breakfast Bags. They are always in need of these bags, and have specific lists of good items to purchase. Contact UBH to ask how you can help and when/where to deliver donations.
Fill the Pantry
Every week, UBH families can grocery shop for free in their onsite pantry. This is a constant need, so if you’d like to donate perishable or non-perishable food items, contact UBH to learn more about food items they need and how to donate.
Volunteer
Upward Bound House is always in need of caring volunteers, and the holiday season is no different. Visit their volunteer page to learn more about volunteer opportunities for individuals as well as groups and corporate partners.
